What to Do After Hail or Wind Damages Your Roof in East Tennessee

Short answer: after a storm, stay off the roof, take photos of any damage you can see from the ground and inside the house, stop active leaks with a professional tarp, and have a roofer document the damage before you file an insurance claim. Most homeowners policies cover sudden wind and hail damage, but each policy is different.

Step 1: Make the house safe

  • Move belongings away from leaks and put buckets under drips.
  • Stay out of rooms with sagging or bulging ceilings.
  • Never climb onto a wet or damaged roof.

Step 2: Document what you can see

Take date-stamped photos of missing shingles in the yard, dents in gutters, downspouts and window screens, and any water stains inside. Hail that dents soft metal is a good sign it may have bruised shingles too.

Step 3: Stop further water damage

Insurance policies generally expect you to prevent further damage. An emergency tarp is temporary, but it keeps rain out until repairs are scheduled. See our emergency tarping service and emergency roof repair.

Step 4: Get a professional inspection

A roofer can spot hail bruising, creased shingles and lifted tabs that are hard to see from the ground. RC Roofing provides a photo report and a detailed estimate you can include with your claim, and we can meet your adjuster on site.

Step 5: File the claim and compare the scope

Call your insurance company, share the photos and estimate, and review the adjuster's scope of work line by line. Your insurer makes the final coverage decision. We will never pressure you to file a claim you do not need.

Watch out for storm chasers

After big storms, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Choose a local roofer with a physical address, local reviews and a workmanship warranty that will still be around in five years. RC Roofing has served East Tennessee since 2004.
